Welcome To Thornbury

Welcome to Thornbury was not your standard hospitality project. Alex from Therefore Studio’s brief was an intriguing split between moody bar, and bustling cantina – two distinct design aesthetics.

He requested a fitting that would work within an industrial setting, that didn’t look tired and dated. The fitting also required localised light pooling, to create contrasts of light and dark through the space, which rendered a warm, welcoming tone. A custom round linear profile pendant was then created.

It was designed to match the linear elements throughout the space, and carry those elements into the lighting grid. A wire cannery (or lack of visible wire) was a driving element for the profile selection. Also the style of light, the profile and opal diffuser aligned with the design intent for the space.

Ben Bates, ambience’s light planner and developer of the pendant adds “For a moody bar, we created a small pocket of light to produce more intimate interactions. For the cantina, though the colour of the light would be similar, we produced a larger light space with more spread. The pendant that we supplied complemented the cantina aesthetic, while Alex’s wall light choice helped establish those intimate spaces”.

The project had challenges due to the timeline and custom nature of the fittings. However a great team of interior architect, project managers and electrician worked together to achieve a wonderful result.
